Land Acknowledgement
“We acknowledge that Korean Language and Culture Program and UBC Vancouver are located on the traditional and unceded territories of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓-speaking xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam people).”
As a program rooted in multiple academic disciplines within a colonial institution, CAP recognizes the deep ties our fields have to colonial histories both locally and globally. This calls on us to critically re-evaluate what we study and how we engage with that knowledge. We are dedicated to continuously transforming the teaching and research conducted under UBC’s name—an effort that includes our involvement in UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan (linked below). Through this work, we aim to better understand our responsibilities not only to the Indigenous peoples and lands where we are located, but also to other colonized spaces we inhabit and pass through.UBC Vancouver stands on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people, who have lived and learned on this land for thousands of years. By engaging with the stories and knowledge systems that Musqueam have generously shared, we take steps toward building more respectful and meaningful relationships with the land and with the Musqueam community, whose presence here remains strong and enduring.
